Our one and only Kingfisher here in California, these cool little waterside birds are unmistakable in appearance and hard to miss with their raucous, rattling call. Kingfishers, well, are fish eaters and dive into water to catch their prey. They are by no means common here, but there was a female that frequented our property back in the winter of 2008, usually perched on a tree branch or shrub near the pond.
12/19/08 Female Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon).
Girls have two chest bands - one blue-gray and the other a rusty brown, while boys only have one blue-gray band.
