San Diego Horned Lizard

4/10/11 San Diego Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma coronatum blainvillii).

At least, based on his markings, that's what I think this extremely cute and photogenic little lizard is. Their population has been declining because of habitat destruction and the fact that harvester ants, which make up 90% of their diet, are being decimated by non-native Argentine ants. I found this adorable, studly lizard (all 2 1/2" of him) hanging out on the driveway.

4/10/11 What a poser! So wanted to pick it up and cuddle it, but didn't want it to squirt a stream of blood at me from the corner of its eye. Really, I kid you not! http://www.californiaherps.com/lizards/pages/p.blainvillii.html
