White-Tailed Kite

6/10/12 Juvenile White-Tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus).

White-tailed kites are magnificent birds-of-prey and we are lucky to have them here. They like to perch on treetops (in this case, it's an Engelmann Oak on the hill above the orchard) and will hover midair, flapping their wings rapidly, before swooping down to catch a rodent on the ground. Very, very cool!

The adults have white & gray plumage and black shoulders, while the juveniles have brownish streaks. Eyes are a striking red.
