1/15/11 California Dogface (Zerene eurydice).
This butterfly is endemic to California and found in the chaparral and woodland habitats of the Santa Ana Mountains (which happens to be where we are). They're quite flitty and flighty, so it was hard to get a good shot, but this guy was so obsessed with a bloom on a wand flower (Gaura lindheimeri) that I managed to get one in. Btw, the California Dogface has been the official State insect of California since 1972.
